Provisional Drivers License

As a new learner driver in the UK before you can learn to drive a car on public roads you must be in possession of a valid provisional drivers license for Great Britain or Northern Ireland.

You are able to apply for your provisional drivers license up to three months before your 17th birthday however your provisional driving licence will not become valid until your 17th Birthday.

If you are disabled you can apply for your provisional driving license up to three months before your 16th Birthday but it will not become valid until your 16th Birthday.

Provisional driving licenses are issued by the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency  (DVLA).

Your provisional drivers licence will entitle you to drive under the supervision of a full driving license holder who is over the age of 21 and holds a valid full drivers license for at least three years in the relevant vehicle category.

Once you have passed both the Theory Driving Test and Practical Driving Test you are able to exchange the provisional drivers license to a full driving license.
