Tyre Tread Depth

Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer: No cuts or bulges. 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breath of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Additional Notes: May be asked to demonstrate using the depth gauge. Look every day (check weekly.)

Anti Lock Braking System

Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.

Answer: If the control indicator does not extinguish after a few seconds, or if it illuminates while driving, there is a fault in the ABS.

Additional Notes: Control indicator illuminates for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on. Once the control indicator extinguishes, the system is ready for operation.

Headlights and tail lights

Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Answer: Turn the lights switch all the way to the right clockwise, walk around the vehicle observing the correct function of the lights. (Ignition does not need to be on).  Do not walk into the road, stay on kerb side. Check before, during and after long journey.

Additional Notes: As this is a tell me question, there is no need to physically check the lights.
